what is the difference between a “strap hinge album” and a “post bound album”?
Actually the first post isn’t entirely correct.
Strap hinge albums were made popular by Creative Memories. In buying their albums, you HAVE to buy their refills. No other refills will fit their albums. It’s not a good way to expand an album as you cannot just change pages in the middle. You MUST scrap in order of how you want your book to be completed.
Say you are making an A to Z book, you know what order you want and it isn’t a problem. But if you are doing a general book and maybe you scrap your Christmas photos before Halloween ones, you will have to rip the completed pages and pictures off of the strap hinge pages and re-adhere them to have the album in order.
Also, the pages can still get warped, torn, and bent. A page protector that slips OVER the page is still needed to protect your work and if you buy a strap hinge, you are paying for more hinge refills first and on top of it, page protectors. So you are paying a lot more money for these albums.
Also with strap hinge, your 12×12 pages are rarely a 12×12 workspace. So if you go to a store & buy a piece of 12 x 12 paper, you will have to trim one side to allow room for the binding.
With a post bound album, you do not find pages to match the album, you find page protectors. Your pages slip into the protectors. In order to get protectors that match your book, you should get some made by the same manufacturer. If you cannot find these, then you can use a hole punch and adjust the holes on the protectors that you do find to make a good fit. Something not possible with SH albums.
The post bound will have metal posts in the spine to hold these protectors. When you are adding more pages, you will also add pieces of these metal posts. They screw into the original posts, making the book thicker. Any Scrapbook store will have these as well.
